Just after midnight on Sunday, October 1, 1911, Marshal Kirk ordered a group
of men involved in a drunken brawl to disperse and go home or he would arrest
them. The “rowdies” turned on the unarmed marshal and beat him “insensible” with
clubs. The Marshal died of his injuries 30 hours later at 6 A.M. Monday morning,
October 2nd. Six men were arrested for the Marshal’s killing.
