Deputy Carter and Altus Police Officer Joe Whitt were attempting to stop a
truck suspected of bringing illegal whiskey into Oklahoma from Texas about four
and a half miles southwest of Altus about 9 P.M. on Friday, August 29, 1930.
When the officers pulled along side of the truck and ordered the men inside to
pullover the men opened fire on the officers. Both officers were wounded. Deputy
Carter died shortly after the shooting. Carter left behind a wife and two young
daughters.
