About 9 A.M. on Sunday October 13, 1912, City Marshal Murphy and Osage
County Deputy Sheriff George Andrews when to a field to arrest W. B. Shervington
on a charge of horse theft. The officers located Shervington walking on a road
toward them carrying a shotgun. When ordered to drop the shot gun he took aim at
the same time Marshal Murphy was drawing his gun. Both men fired at the same
time. Murphy was hit by several buckshot near the heart and died. Shervington
ran off unhurt as Deputy Andrews fired several shots at him also.
